Sony Ericsson would like to sell 50 percent of UIQ to Motorola
10/25/2007
Sony Ericsson announced today (Monday) it has agreed to sell a 50 percent stake of UI Holdings BV to rival Motorola. UI Holdings BV is the parent company of UIQ Technology AB. Under the agreement, Motoroloa and SE will work together on the UIQ platform.
SE acquired UIQ from Symbian in February 2007.
The two companies plan to "significantly increase their cooperation and support for the UIQ developer program."
Sony Ericsson added the deal should be perceived "as an invitation to other mobile device vendors to participate in the UIQ community, either as shareholders or licensees." but the deal was also interpreted as a competitive threat to Nokia, the world's largest mobile smartphone maker, which also owns 47.9% of Symbian.
The largest player in terms of mobile software at the end of 2006 was Symbian with 67% of the market, according to data from research firm Canalys. At that time, Microsoft Windows Mobile had 14% of the smartphone market, while Blackberry owner Research in Motion had 7%. UIQ's market share was in single digits.
Under the agreement, UIQ Technology will be vendor and chipset independent and will be licensed equally to all mobile device vendors in the industry.
The two companies will also be committed to expanding their shareholder base of UI Holdings to include other handset vendors
